Germany has many excellent ski resorts where you can let loose during the snowy season
According to Deutsche Welle, the total number of skiers in Germany is estimated at about 16 million people. More than 55 million have never skied or have forgotten when they last did. In the winter season, about 700,000 Germans ski several times a month or even several times a week. For this, you can head to the best ski resorts in Germany.
Their names are like chapters of a winter fairy tale: Thuringian Forest, Ore Mountains, Black Forest, Harz... Here you can ski or just walk through snow-covered forests and slopes.
THURINGIAN FOREST
Thüringer Wald is one of the best regions for winter sports in Eastern Germany. For example, the Skiarena Silbersattel downhill run in the town of Steinach is popular. But for those who prefer cross-country skiing, many different trails are laid out in the Thuringian Forest.
ORE MOUNTAINS
The 1200-meter Mount Fichtelberg, near which the winter resort of Oberwiesenthal is located, is the highest mountain in Saxony. German Oberwiesenthal is the most important ski center of the Ore Mountains together with the neighboring Czech resort of Klínovec. There are not only slopes for downhill skiing and ski jumps, but also a toboggan run.
SAUERLAND
Sauerland is a mountainous region in western Germany. It is the largest area for winter sports north of the Alps. It is located a two-hour drive from the Rhine and Ruhr regions, as well as Frankfurt am Main. In total, there are 57 ski resorts with 148 lifts. Snowboarding courses are particularly popular.
BLACK FOREST
Schwarzwald is a mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The highest point of the region is Mount Feldberg (1493 meters). There are 31 lifts. The total length of slopes of all difficulty levels for downhill is 55 kilometers. The season lasts more than 110 days a year, thanks to its location above 950 meters and the presence of snow cannons.
BAVARIAN FOREST
In the Bayerischer Wald region, the season usually lasts from early December to the second half of March. The highest point of the Bavarian Forest is Mount Großer Arber (1456 meters). In recent years, several new downhill ski runs have been equipped in the Bavarian Forest.
FICHTEL MOUNTAINS
Fichtelgebirge is a medium-height mountain range in northeastern Bavaria. The total length of all cross-country ski trails is 100 kilometers. Another 30 kilometers are for walking through the winter forest. Of course, there are also downhill runs, snowboard trails, and ice rinks.
TAUNUS
The Taunus region is a stone's throw from Frankfurt am Main, which many of its residents take advantage of. The highest point of the Taunus is the Großer Feldberg mountain range. Its height reaches 880 meters. The ski season here is short. The region is popular among cross-country skiing enthusiasts, who are attracted by a good network of walking trails and picturesque landscapes.
HARZ
Among the medium-height mountains (Mittelgebirge) in Germany, the Harz region plays a more modest role for winter sports than many other regions, but it has good conditions for cross-country skiing and ski jumping. There are also downhill runs of various difficulty levels. The highest mountain is Brocken (1141 meters).
EIFEL
The Eifel region is located in western Germany, between Aachen and Trier. Here is the ski area Weißer Stein and the eponymous White Mountain with a height of 693 meters. The total length of ski slopes equipped with lifts is 27 kilometers. You don't have to bring skis; you can also go sledding.
BAVARIAN ALPS
The most popular ski resorts in Germany are located in the Alpine regions of Bavaria: Allgäu, Berchtesgadener Land, Oberbayern. In total, there are 80 winter resorts, with 108 cable cars, two cog railways, more than 780 ski lifts, and 6,000 cross-country ski trails.
