The UK government plans to abandon cheap labor migrants from the EU by setting strict requirements for obtaining a work visa
A points-based system is proposed, which will take into account the immigrant's education, qualifications, salary and profession. A visa will be issued only to those who receive a sufficient number of points. In addition, foreigners must demonstrate a good knowledge of English and have a job offer with an annual salary of at least £25,600 (about €31,000).
Such a system will create the prerequisites for people with the right skills to come to the UK and support our country and our economy, said Home Secretary Priti Patel at the presentation of the government's plans.
At the same time, as BBC notes, the planned reform has drawn criticism from business representatives, who point out that many firms cannot do without foreign workers and that the UK is likely to be unable to meet the demand for harvest helpers and junior medical staff on its own.
Authorities in London counter that the British economy should reduce its dependence on cheap labor from Europe, focusing instead on investment in high technology and automation.
High immigration to the UK, especially from poor EU countries such as Bulgaria and Romania, was one of the main reasons for the 2016 referendum on Brexit.
