According to the chairman of the country's Central Election Commission, Zenonas Vaigauskas, more than 63% of voters took part in the referendum. Of these, 88% voted for Lithuania's accession to the EU, which exceeds the results of public opinion polls.
According to Lithuanian law, a referendum is considered valid if more than half of voters participate. Lithuania will be able to apply for EU membership if more than half of those who voted support it. In that case, the country will join the European Union in May 2004.
