Children from Ukraine affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident undergo comprehensive rehabilitation and health-improving measures at the Tarara medical and health center. Specifically for Ukrainian children, a mobile laboratory for radiobiological measurements was opened, and computerized accounting and monitoring of their condition is carried out.
The maintenance, treatment, and health improvement of these children in Cuba is carried out at the expense of the Cuban side under the state program 'Children of Chernobyl.' According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, more than $300 million was spent on implementing this program over 10 years. The Ukrainian side, at its own expense, conducts preliminary examination, selection, and transportation of children to Havana and then back to Ukraine.
The Cuban government has expressed its readiness to continue the 'Children of Chernobyl' program. As noted by the Ministry of Health, the Republic of Cuba remains the only country in the world where care for the health of 'Chernobyl children' is elevated to the state level. Mykola Polishchuk, on behalf of the Ukrainian leadership, thanked the Cuban people for their assistance to Ukrainian children over 15 years.
