As a young man, Christian studied art, was fond of cinema, and while watching films, he always paid attention to the costumes of the characters, including women's outfits: evening dresses, cocktail dresses. The designer admits that he still remembers many costumes from films of that time, down to the smallest details. He received his education at the Sorbonne in Paris.
The city offered many opportunities for a budding talented shoe designer. Christian worked at the fashion house Hermès, then moved to the fashion house of Jean Patou. The oblivion in which this fashion house had been mired quickly ended thanks to Lacroix. The fashion house rapidly became popular, and its sales tripled.
After six years of collaboration, Christian left the House of Patou and in 1987 opened his own fashion house. Such an event had not happened in Paris for 20 years! In a short period of time, Christian became a two-time winner of the Golden Thimble award, the author of a prêt-à-porter collection, and the creator of the stunning perfume "C’est la vie Christian Lacroix." Throughout these years, Lacroix drew inspiration from history: the Middle Ages, the Napoleonic era. 1995 was marked by the release of a clothing collection called "Bazar" and a line of decorative jewelry. The clothing, aimed at the young, strong, and active, amazed with its brightness and unusual color combinations. Perhaps the influence of the modernist artists' works that the designer loved played a role.
Lacroix's style has always been distinguished by bright colors and unexpected combinations, flowing, sometimes multi-layered pyramidal and trapezoidal silhouettes, and an abundance of accessories. Christian loves to use flowers – fresh and artificial – they adorn hairstyles, hats, and necklines. Ruffles and lace create a mysterious, exciting movement, ornamental embroidery adds refinement and tenderness.
The outfits created by Lacroix are suitable for any season, as he uses a variety of materials – from satin and crepe to wool and mohair. Unfortunately, not every woman can afford to buy an evening dress from the famous designer.
