Until 2003, fingerprints and photographs were required from citizens of other countries who planned to stay in South Korea for more than a year. After 2003, this measure was also abolished.
According to government officials, the new law is aimed at combating international terrorism, as well as crimes committed by foreigners on the territory of South Korea.
As noted by Lenta.ru, the strict measures are being introduced against the backdrop of the country's desire to become more attractive to tourists. Thus, in October 2008, Korea officially declared 2010, 2011, and 2012 as years of tourism. During this time, it plans to attract more than 10 million tourists to the country, who will bring several billion dollars to the budget. According to officials, the new security requirements will not affect these plans in any way.
