Who receives more parcels

Residents of Germany receive more parcels at home than the population of any other European state

As reported by "Russkaya Germaniya", the comparison was conducted in 17 countries worldwide. Only in China do people receive more parcels than in Germany – 70 (it should be noted that the study only covered the multi-million cities of Beijing and Shanghai, not the situation across the entire country). In the UK, 22 packages are delivered to the address of an average recipient per year, in the USA – 21.

From the perspective of McKinsey experts, the above-mentioned countries are mature markets where serious growth in either the profits of shipping companies or the volume of shipments is unlikely in the near future. In Germany, this volume will continue its steady growth: the online trade boom persists, and turnover until 2030 will grow by 10 percent per year – five times faster than competitors with stationary retail outlets.

Compared to Germany, the volumes of delivered parcels are relatively low among our closest European neighbors: an Austrian receives 14 packages per year, a Swiss – 9. In Sweden, the average resident receives six parcels per year, and each Italian – only two.

At the same time, analysts do not predict a cloudless future for classic postal companies, which today almost exclusively dominate the parcel delivery market – at least in Germany. Pressure on parcel giants will increase from their own clients – online retailers: first and foremost, the largest internet concerns (such as Amazon) are making active attempts to take over shipping and organize their own delivery services.

In order not to lose out to them in the competitive struggle, postal companies, whether DHL, Hermes, UPS, DPD or FedEx, will have to show particular ingenuity, introduce new types of services and continue to reduce tariffs for corporate clients.
