China stops issuing business visas

According to Lenta.ru, the Chinese authorities explain the tightening of the visa regime by the need to ensure security in the country during the Olympic Games in Beijing. At the same time, business visas will not be issued to businessmen who need to come to the country for negotiations, attending conferences or production.

In addition, the Shanghai Department of International Economic Relations and Trade has ceased support for ordinary business visits, market research or training until mid-September 2008. However, important business trips are allowed if it comes to, for example, a joint venture, but the validity period of such visas will be significantly reduced.

According to WSJ, the American and European foreign trade representations in Hong Kong have already sent letters to the Chinese government warning of possible damage to business. Due to the tightening of the visa regime, hundreds of business meetings and negotiations will be disrupted, and important agreements may not be concluded.
