Usually this traditional event, which has been held for 200 years, attracts thousands of spectators. Competitors slide down a long sloping hill near the city of Gloucester, sitting on wheels of Gloucester cheese weighing 3.1 kilograms each. The distance is 180 meters.
"We are very disappointed that we had to cancel the festival at the last minute," says Tony Tizard, chairman of the organizing committee of the Gloucester cheese rolling. "But even the local ambulance service has refused to serve us, because without help from Rapid UK they cannot save a person if necessary. They can cover only the very bottom of the hill, but not the entire length of the slope."
Previously, attempts were made to ban cheese rolling due to a fairly large number of injuries. However, even when the competition was officially cancelled, hotheads still rolled down the hill, albeit without supervision from rescuers.
