Kaliningrad is a surprisingly beautiful city with a unique history and a huge number of attractions. It became part of the Soviet Union in 1946. At that time, only 15 thousand people lived in the city. Since Kaliningrad was completely destroyed after the war, the local population immediately began its restoration. From the very beginning of the city's accession to the USSR, many representatives of various nationalities lived in it, and nothing has changed since then. This city still remains multinational and very hospitable.
Currently, Kaliningrad is a free economic zone. The city is developing rapidly, but despite the fact that it looks quite modern, all architectural and historical monuments have been preserved. Of course, little remains from the old Middle Ages, since the fire that occurred during the Second World War destroyed many valuables.
Among the many attractions, one can note the Königsberg University (Albertina). This educational institution was built more than 400 years ago. It was founded in 1544 by Duke Albrecht. Initially, the university was a state organization, created to promote religious and educational ideas. Currently, this educational institution is the most popular in Kaliningrad, graduating thousands of students annually.
Special mention should be made of the city fortifications. Until 1945, Kaliningrad, which at that time was called Königsberg, was a double fortress standing on two banks of the river. From the time of its founding, this city constantly developed its fortification system. Moreover, it was regularly updated along with new developments in engineering and military affairs. Currently, little remains of the powerful fortress — the Wrangel Tower, Dona Tower, city gates, the Lithuanian Rampart, partially destroyed walls near the South Station, and several forts.
Upon arriving in Kaliningrad, everyone should definitely visit the castle ponds. To enjoy their incredibly beautiful view, it is best to climb onto the roof of the House of Soviets. The oldest pond appeared back in the 14th century. It was formed by monks to ensure a constant water source near the castle. Currently, these reservoirs are favorite spots for locals and tourists.
Also a must-visit is the Kaliningrad Drama Theater. It is located in an old building that was built back in 1912. At first, only musical performances were held there, but after the reconstruction in 1927, it began to be used as a drama theater. During the war, it was partially destroyed, so it was reconstructed again in 1960. The building itself is incredibly beautiful and unique.
In Kaliningrad, there is a Fishing Village. You can get there by boat, steamer, or motorboat. The architecture of this province is stylized to resemble pre-war Königsberg. Therefore, once you are here, you will immediately be transported to that time. This village is one of the most beautiful places in Kaliningrad.
In addition, the city is famous for its zoo, where you can see more than 2 thousand animals, including Bennett's kangaroo, curly pelicans, white-naped cranes, and others.
There are many more unique places in Kaliningrad that everyone would be interested in visiting. And if you decide to go to this city, be sure to come for as long as possible.
