Any breakdown can happen on the road, even if the car worked perfectly in city conditions before. Moreover, for a long trip (especially if it is a trip abroad) you need to set off in a fully functional car. Even if car body polishing is needed, it should be done in advance so that you can hit the road in a prepared vehicle.
Every driver takes care of their car differently: some regularly perform maintenance, while others drive until something breaks. Of course, for careful drivers, preparation before a long trip will not be difficult – you only need to check the levels of technical fluids and top them up if necessary, check whether the turn signals and lighting are working, and pump up the tires. And if everything is in order, you can safely set off on the long journey.
Drivers who are not very careful with their iron horse will have a more difficult time with preparation. In addition to checking the signals, lights, and mirrors, you will also have to replace the spark plugs. If the timing belt has not been changed for a long time, it must be replaced before the trip, otherwise it may break on the road, causing a lot of problems and extra financial costs. Brake pads and filters are also recommended to be replaced.
Do not forget that even if the antifreeze, oil, brake fluid, or any other fluid is topped up to the level, you still need to take these fluids with you and find a place for them in the trunk, because anything can happen on the road.
The car's suspension plays a very important role, so all parts must be inspected and, if necessary, replaced with new ones. For a long trip, the tires should be in perfect condition – there should be no bulges, otherwise the tire could burst. Also, to prevent the steering from pulling to one side during a long journey, wheel balancing will be required.
The braking system must also be in perfect condition. For this, it is better to go to a car service center, where specialists will identify problems through diagnostics and fix them.
It is also worth entrusting the inspection of the engine to specialists. All valves should be adjusted, belts well tensioned, and the engine oil should be changed together with the filter.
Even if the car is fully functional, it is worth being cautious and taking the necessary tools with you. These include various wrenches, screwdrivers, bolts, sockets, pliers, a jack, a fire extinguisher, work gloves, and at least five liters of water. A first aid kit must be in the car.
If space in the car allows, you can take a car cooler so that food does not spoil during the long journey. And to avoid getting lost on the road, you need to enter the route into the navigator before the trip.
