Specialists at Samsonite, the largest luggage manufacturer, wanted to make travelers' lives easier and developed a new type of travel bag
This familiar item is owned by most people, perhaps even everyone. But not so long ago, those setting off on a long trip for work or other reasons had a hard time. They carried all their belongings from the bus or taxi to the train or airport in their hands. Specialists at Samsonite, the largest manufacturer, wanted to make travelers' lives easier and developed a new type of travel bag.
The first wheeled model
In 1974, an improved suitcase model was patented – a plastic construction with wheels located in one of its corners. On the other side was a retractable handle, making it convenient to move the item in a tilted position. Such a suitcase did not become popular. Although convenient, it had drawbacks: its rather large size prevented it from being placed on an airplane overhead bin; when moving over uneven surfaces or around corners, the bag would tip over.
Therefore, later more convenient and functional models appeared, such as the Enrico Benetti suitcase and other types.
Travelpro suitcases
American pilot Robert Plath wanted to create a convenient travel bag, so he attached furniture wheels to it and sewed a pocket on the side that hid a retractable handle made from tubes and rods. Thanks to the wide wheelbase, the item moved stably over uneven surfaces.
Plath's colleagues appreciated his invention and asked him to make similar bags for them. When the number of people wanting such a convenient suitcase increased, the pilot offered commissions to those who brought him new customers. In 1989, he patented his idea, naming the wheeled bag Rollaboard, and founded the company Travelpro.
High demand for functional travel bags contributed to the young company's active growth. In the first year, they sold one and a half million dollars' worth of products, and ten years later, Plath sold his stake in the company. His invention greatly eased the lives of people traveling to cities and countries. Airlines even changed the height of overhead bins in planes to accommodate suitcases, which now outnumber other types of luggage.
Similar models are now produced by many well-known luggage manufacturers. Their products differ in the quality of materials and hardware used, design, and size. Many consider this type of bag the most convenient, functional, and reliable for moving luggage over long and short distances. Their assortment is diverse, and you can choose models for adults and children, youth and respectable businesspeople, men and women of different ages.
