Health funds are specific services that pharmacies, clinics, some hospitals, and medical centers are required to provide to citizens. Depending on the type of services, each citizen can choose a particular health fund and switch from one to another if necessary.
General features of Israeli health funds
appointment booking with a doctor, for tests both by phone and online;
the ability to choose the language of service, including Russian;
emergency care in a hospital;
additional insurance.
Each health fund offers individual insurance, discounts on services and medications, for which the repatriate will have to pay extra separately.
There are four such health funds operating in the country:
Clalit – the largest, as half of Israelis use it. The fund's institutions operate in almost all populated areas of Israel. This includes 14 large medical centers and several specialized clinic departments. Due to significant queues in Clalit, waiting for an appointment with a specialist can sometimes take weeks or even months.
Maccabi – ranks second in terms of insured residents. Thanks to a well-established online system, patients can view their entire medical history and treatment, and book appointments with doctors via a mobile app without leaving the couch.
Meuhedet – has over a million clients. Among others, the fund stands out for its maximum stability in terms of the cost of service packages.
Leumit – the smallest health fund. It is popular among clients because the queue for a doctor moves significantly faster.
Registration procedure in health funds
We recommend choosing a health fund before becoming an Israeli citizen. In that case, immediately upon arrival, even at the airport, the repatriate informs a representative of the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration of their choice, who then registers the new client for free.
In other cases, a person will have to go to a bank post office, submit an application, pay a fee, and wait for registration within a week. However, before that, it is necessary to open a bank account from which the monthly health insurance fee will be deducted.
