Italy to Temporarily Leave Schengen

"We have prepared a proposal on security measures, including, in particular, the suspension of the Schengen agreement. I will submit it for consideration at the next meeting of the Council of Ministers, and also present it to the European Commission," Maroni said, clarifying that he intends to request all "appropriate financial and human resources."

"Compared to Maddalena, the problems in L'Aquila are different – not simpler, but not more complicated either. We will need to strengthen and increase the number of law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and other services," Maroni added, explaining that in this case it is necessary both for the reconstruction of L'Aquila and for ensuring security at the summit.

According to ITAR-TASS, the G8 summit will be held in Italy on July 8-10, 2009.
