The total number of new speed limit signs placed on Irish roads exceeds 60,000. Many drivers remain dissatisfied – they cannot understand the restrictions on certain sections of roads, reports Lenta.ru citing the Telegraph. The Irish government has conducted several nationwide campaigns explaining what speed limit is set on different types of roads. In particular, drivers are advised not to exceed 120 km/h on motorways.
The Irish police have already warned that there will be no 'trial period' for either drivers or police officers, so a new wave of confusion is inevitable. The fact is that for quite a long time road patrols will not be able to work effectively: about half of the road 'radars' are set to measure speed in miles, and now police officers will have to constantly consult a conversion table.
Ireland abandoned miles in favor of kilometers in 1983. The transition to the new system of measurement caused extremely serious problems, as drivers for a long time could not understand the new distance signs (recall that 1 statute mile equals 1.609 meters). Thus, now in Europe there is only one country that adheres to the old system of road signs – Great Britain. A press secretary for the Ministry of Transport of the United Kingdom stated that no changes are expected in this area in the near future.
