As of January 2009, only 11,500 foreign citizens or companies own real estate in Croatia. Moreover, about half of this number are Germans. At the same time, the German agency DPA claims that Croatian media have exaggerated these figures several times.
As Croatian realtors note, there is no 'fire sale' in favor of foreigners, contrary to the concerns of the public and some politicians. They expected that easing the conditions for purchasing real estate for foreigners would revive the market, but no significant influx of buyers, including from abroad, has been recorded.
According to Prian.ru, amid the economic recession, the Croatian housing market is stagnating. The price range for coastal real estate also remains at the previous level – from €1,750 per square meter in the city of Pula in the northern part of the coast to €3,650 per square meter in one of the country's most popular resorts, Dubrovnik.
