Gambling addiction recognized as a serious dependency

Today, gambling addiction is considered as serious a dependency as drug addiction and alcoholism. It is a form of mental disorder in which a person begins to live in a fictional virtual world that gradually becomes more important than real space.

According to experts, treatment of gambling addiction requires a serious approach that includes several components. The mental, psychological, and physical characteristics of the person must be taken into account. Treatment of gambling addicts is carried out in rehabilitation centers.

When does gambling addiction become a problem?

By themselves, computer or gambling games are not some kind of evil. Many people play racing games, shooters, poker, casino, and nothing happens to them. The game does not capture these people so strongly that they become addicted. Many men, women, and teenagers live normally, and no mental disorders from games occur in them.

The causes of gambling addiction are still not fully understood. Most often, addiction to games arises in people with a labile psyche, who have a tendency to one or another addiction.

A morbid preoccupation with games can appear at a time when a person is experiencing some life difficulties. Their psyche refuses to fully perceive the surrounding reality, because the virtual world of games becomes much more interesting at that moment. Addiction comes gradually. The person themselves does not notice that they are caught in the nets of gambling addiction. Their relationships with loved ones deteriorate, they lose interest in society and everything happening around them.

According to conducted research, addiction to gambling mainly affects adults. These are women aged 49 and older and men aged 37 and older. Moreover, awareness of the problem occurs only after several years. 14% of gambling addicts have suicidal thoughts. Fortunately, not all decide to put them into reality. Most addicts experience depression.

The problem of elderly gambling addicts is that these people very rarely seek help. As for teenagers, they more often become addicted to computer games. However, this problem is also inherent in representatives of the older generation.

It is impossible to solve the problem of gambling addiction until the person admits themselves as an addict. Only in this case can they be helped, experts believe.
