Kharkiv is the only city in Ukraine that has a full set of awards from the Council of Europe

A deep historical atmosphere and the style of a modern metropolis – these seemingly incompatible features catch the eye of every guest of Kharkiv. Side by side stand religious monuments of Christianity and buildings erected in the best traditions of Soviet monumental classicism, youth art clubs and luxurious restaurants. This is a unique city with a rich past, which is reminded of by many museums, sculptures, cathedrals and ancient buildings.
What to see in Kharkiv, where should a tourist go?
Immediately upon arrival, enjoy traditional tea from a samovar located in the main hall of the Kharkiv Southern Railway Station. This is a huge samovar that weighs more than three hundred kilograms, reaches almost two meters in height, and has a capacity of about 1800 cups of tea.
Near the central city station there is a square with an unusually beautiful design. In summer, flower beds bloom here, and the space is filled with the soothing sounds of water flowing in the fountain. In winter, the Station Square is decorated with bright lights and a huge Christmas tree. At any time of day, Kharkiv residents come here to relax – for leisurely pastime or to attend festive events.
After traveling two stops from the metro station "Yuzhny Vokzal" to "Sovetskaya", you will find yourself in the center of Kharkiv. On Constitution Square, there is also something to see: centuries ago, one of the largest fairs in the entire Russian Empire, the Uspenskaya Fair, was regularly held here. The long history of the square is confirmed by numerous architectural monuments. The "highlight" of this place is the statue of a violinist located on the roof of building No. 18.
Next, we move along Sumskaya Street. Previously, only privileged members of society lived here, in memory of whom many magnificent buildings remain. Also concentrated here are cultural sites – the Shevchenko Theater, a bust monument to the writer Gogol, and the Apartment Building.
Not far from the Lysenko Opera and Ballet Theater, there is a cozy gazebo-fountain "Mirror Stream". This is one of the most notable city symbols, founded in honor of the victory in WWII. A little further you will see the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The cathedral has an organ made in Bavaria. Kharkiv is often called the city of all religions. Here are concentrated monasteries, cathedrals and churches with a rich history and unique architecture.
Those wishing to come into contact with art objects should visit the AVEK Art Gallery, arranged according to high European standards. All exhibitions can be visited free of charge by both citizens and guests of the city.
In total, Kharkiv has 27 parks, the oldest of which is the T. Shevchenko Garden. It is rarely empty; many are attracted here by the special atmosphere created by tropical plants, a cozy cafe and many benches for relaxation. In the garden there is a monument to the famous national poet, a column with an image of the Archangel Michael, and even a monument in honor of a soccer ball.
Kharkiv has gained a reputation as a city with many unusual sculptures – in honor of cartoon characters, exotic animals, and even a frozen student with a laptop. The bronze monument to the famous hero of the film "The Twelve Chairs" – the restless and charming adventurer Ostap Bender – is of interest. On the bench where he sits, there is a free space, so you can always sit next to him and take a memorable photo.
The main attraction is Freedom Square, one of the largest squares in the world (about 12 hectares). It was built to emphasize the status, because Kharkiv was the capital of the Ukrainian SSR until 1934.

Where to go in Kharkiv with children?
The favorite among entertainment complexes is the Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure. A child will visit the local "Disneyland" and is guaranteed to find entertainment to their liking. Go to the park that has been awarded the "Golden Pony Awards". And to the city zoo, where on 22 hectares there are about 400 mammals, fish, amphibians and other inhabitants of the animal world.
