Formigal Ski Resort
In Spain, six regions for ski holidays are actively visited by tourists from many countries. One of them is the Aragonese Pyrenees (Sierra de Guara). The Aragonese Pyrenees are the central part of the Pyrenees, located in the Huesca region, in the north of the province of Aragon.
Here the mountains are the highest, steepest and most rugged. There are four large ski resorts in the region.
The largest of them is Formigal (El Formigal). This is a unique, recently renovated ski resort in Spain, with about 100 million euros invested in its reconstruction project. New slopes and lifts have been built, and the number of hotel beds has increased.
Formigal Ski Resort is unique in the versatility of its slopes, with 137 km of ski runs and officially 4 freeride zones (areas for off-piste skiing). This is quite enough to not make a single similar descent over 14 days.
For extreme skiing enthusiasts, there is the possibility of descents using helicopters. The flight is €195 with a guide and full avalanche equipment. If you want to have a nice lunch after the helicopter day, the price goes up to just €225! Beginners wanting to try off-piste skiing are offered a lighter option with transport by snowcat (transport cost included in the ski pass) to the most scenic freeride zone for beginners.
An hour's drive from Formigal is the ancient city of Zaragoza with thousand-year-old historical monuments from the time of the Roman Empire. Thermal springs are 30 minutes from the resort.
And how to get to Formigal? It's very simple. Fly to Madrid or Barcelona, then a high-speed train to Zaragoza (1 hour 20 minutes), and then a bus to Formigal (1 hour).
The total cost of a ski tour to Formigal does not exceed the cost of a similar trip to Austria or Andorra, and even less to France or Switzerland. On average it is about €850 per week.
