The Ukrainian diaspora is one of the largest in Canada and the United States
From October 11 to 17, the US State Department is holding Global Diaspora Week to highlight the role of the diaspora in the development of the global community as a whole. In fact, given the global scale and commercial opportunities of diasporas, they can be the most effective social networks in the world. Their activities are an important factor in expanding trade, capital flows, and the spread of technology and knowledge for both origin and host countries. Today, the annual amount of migrant remittances to their home countries exceeds $500 billion.
The United States has the largest number of global diaspora representatives – more than 62 million first- and second-generation immigrants. Except for Native Americans, the entire population of the country has foreign roots. Among others, the diasporas of Ethiopians, Sikhs, Cubans, and Bukharan Jews thrive in the US.
More Chinese live outside mainland China than the population of France. About 22 million ethnic Indians have settled on all continents, forming the world's largest diaspora. Mexicans are in second place.
Some migrants stay forever, others return to their homeland after studying or working. Still others continue their journey, moving to new places. "People should not have to choose between countries," said Kathleen Newland of the Migration Policy Institute in an interview with The Economist. "They can belong to two or more countries."
