On Sunday, February 1, a new catalog of fines for traffic violations came into effect in Germany. In particular, as reported by Deutsche Welle, the fine for speeding in populated areas is now €80 to €760 (previously €50 to 425).
Driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs is punishable by a fine of €500 (previously €250). Drivers who violate right-of-way rules must be prepared to part with an amount from €100 (previously €50).
According to German Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, any system of fines will only achieve the desired effect if violators are regularly punished. In this regard, the minister called on regional authorities to tighten controls on the country's roads.
