The new rules will apply to airports of those countries that pass an inspection for compliance with EU standards. Previously, according to the directive of the EU executive authority that came into force on November 6, 2006, transit passengers were required to surrender liquids and alcoholic beverages purchased in stores beyond EU checkpoints. The current restrictions in force at airports of EU member states also stipulate that each passenger may take on board an aircraft containers with a total volume of no more than one liter. At the same time, the volume of each container with liquid, including perfume bottles and bottles of soft drinks and alcohol, which passengers are required to keep in transparent plastic bags 'sealed' by airport security, must not exceed 100 ml. However, these restrictions do not apply to liquids purchased in duty-free shops within the European Union, as well as directly on board aircraft.
According to EU data, at Amsterdam airport alone, security confiscates about 1,600 liters of alcoholic beverages and perfume products every week. Security requirements for passenger air transport in EU states were tightened after the prevention in August last year by London police of a series of terrorist attacks on flights. The terrorists intended to bring liquid explosives on board aircraft in drinking containers.
