EU Allows Mobile Phone Use on Airplanes

As Gazeta.Ru reports, the corresponding directive allows airlines to launch mobile communication services as early as this year.

“On-board mobile phone services can be a very interesting new service, especially for those business passengers who need to stay connected wherever they are,” said EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding. She also urged mobile operators not to set excessively high tariffs for such a service.

Air France, Midland Airways, TAP and Ryanair have already announced their intention to introduce such a service. At the same time, according to Associated Press, Lufthansa said it does not plan to introduce such a service.
