Germany has named the best of the best universities based on the competition results

RWTH Aachen University
RWTH Aachen University is not being classified as an elite university for the first time. It is a forge of German engineers. But in addition to training sought-after personnel, it conducts cutting-edge research. Development of efficient biofuels, digitalization of production, creation of new computer architecture based on quantum mechanics principles – projects recognized under ExStra.
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
The most elite universities, according to the current competition, are in Baden-Württemberg. One of them is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. This university is traditionally strong in disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. Lithium-free batteries and nanomaterials for 3D printing – these are what the research complexes at KIT are working on, which helped secure the prestigious title.
University of Konstanz
This university in southern Germany has just over 10,000 students. The University of Konstanz is a reformist university, welcoming innovation in teaching and a creative approach to scientific work. It is on the "elite" list for the third time. The victory in the competition was brought by two research clusters studying political inequality and the features of collective intelligence.
University of Tübingen
The University of Tübingen is one of the oldest in Europe. Its hallmarks are microbiology, biochemistry, nanotechnology, archaeology, and pedagogy. It received the elite title again, partly thanks to three clusters: focusing on personalized cancer treatment, fighting infections with beneficial bacteria, and machine learning in research.
Heidelberg University
Heidelberg University is the largest in Baden-Württemberg. For centuries, it has nurtured the scientific elite: doctors, theologians, lawyers, and teachers. Its scientific profile is shaped by research in molecular and cell biology, materials science, and particle physics. The university has three graduate colleges: in physics, biosciences, and mathematical modeling.
Dresden University of Technology
Dresden University of Technology is one of Europe's leading universities in microelectronics and nanotechnology. Equally significant is its research in medicine, microbiology, and biochemistry. For example, it houses the Center for Regenerative Therapy. Apart from Berlin, Dresden is the only city in eastern Germany with an elite university.
Humboldt University of Berlin
Berlin's universities submitted a joint application for the elite title competition – and won together. Together with the Charité hospital, Humboldt University, the Free University, and the Technical University created the Berlin University Alliance. Shared infrastructure reduces bureaucracy and gives scientists more opportunities for collaboration.
Free University of Berlin
Scientists from the Berlin University Alliance jointly seek treatments for neurological diseases, develop designs for objects made of new materials, and study intelligence and the interrelationship of chemical and biological catalysts. The alliance also hosts the Math+ Center for Mathematical Research.
University of Hamburg
This is one of the largest and youngest universities in Germany. This year it celebrated its centenary. Students are offered 70 bachelor's and 100 master's degree programs. In science, the University of Hamburg is particularly promising in manuscript culture research, development of biomolecule visualization methods, studying climate change dynamics, and the origin of the universe.
University of Bonn
This university made it onto the elite list for the first time. It employs the world's best mathematician, Peter Scholze. Besides mathematics, leading fields are economics, medicine, natural sciences, and agronomy. It leads in the number of clusters that won in the ExStra competition: six. University scientists are working, for example, on using robots to combat weeds and studying the immune system.
Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich
Bavaria's capital has two elite universities. One is Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. It has 18 faculties and 150 specializations – from Egyptology to dentistry. In science, special attention is paid to new quantum technologies, neurological diseases, the theory of the origin of the universe and life on Earth, and efficient conversion of "green" energy.
Technical University of Munich
This university is considered the most innovative in Germany. From diesel to a passenger capsule for Elon Musk, many developments have been created within its walls. The Technical University of Munich closely cooperates with industry and business and creates its own startups. It has held the elite title for over 10 years, as has Ludwig Maximilian University, with which it shares four joint clusters.
