The first to draw attention to the deplorable state of the beach was the manager of the Offshore Sailing Club yacht club, Keith Match: 'This is a sewer pit. Our tests showed the presence of too much E. coli in the water near the shoreline. Swimming there turns into swimming in a toilet.'
According to The Australian, local authorities blamed the pollution on unscrupulous truck drivers (mostly from Southeast Asia) who dump human waste and industrial waste into the ocean. The drivers justify themselves by saying they are paid too little to take the waste to the desert, where the only sewage pumping station in the area is located.
According to Prian.ru, after information about the pollution hit the media, city authorities introduced a fine of $25,000 for illegal dumping of waste into the ocean and storm drains. Foreign drivers face confiscation of their trucks and even deportation.
