Labor shortage breeds illegal workers

The number of illegal foreign workers in the Czech Republic has sharply increased

Among the foreigners caught, citizens of third countries (non-EU) predominated – 3,595 people. The annual increase was a substantial 87%. Experts explain this by an acute shortage of personnel on the Czech labor market.

The most numerous among the violators were Ukrainians (2,873 people), Vietnamese (285), Moldovans (197), Serbs (59), Uzbeks (34), Belarusians (23), and Russians (21). Among the violators were 225 EU citizens – here Slovaks, Romanians, and Bulgarians predominated.

As Vinegret.cz notes, foreigners most often worked illegally on construction sites, in manufacturing enterprises, wholesale and retail trade, auto repair shops, hotels, and restaurants. In total, the inspection issued 496 fines to employers totaling 151 million crowns.
