What you should know when crossing the border with a computer?

Recently, our compatriots have increasingly been traveling abroad for leisure. The purposes of these trips can be different: vacation, study at foreign universities, business visits. At the same time, a personal computer is often an indispensable companion on a trip. To avoid problems when moving it across the border, it is necessary to know the customs clearance rules for such devices.

According to Ukrainian legislation, a portable computer is classified as an item for personal use and is declared only at the owner's discretion. If you decide to buy a laptop abroad, this rule also applies to it. It is strongly recommended to carry it only in hand luggage.

As for desktop PCs, they are subject to the general rule that duty-free import of goods is allowed for a value of up to 200 euros and a weight not exceeding 50 kg. Therefore, if you are lucky enough to purchase a computer abroad for a value below the specified amount, you will not have to pay duty. Of course, you will need to provide a document confirming the purchase. The same applies to purchases on foreign online auctions.

But what to do if you need to buy a server abroad? For such expensive purchases – with a value exceeding 1000 euros – the same customs clearance procedure for cargo applies as for subjects of foreign economic activity, that is, customs duty is levied. In this case, it does not matter whether you are importing the equipment for personal use or for commercial purposes.

In addition, when leaving Ukraine with equipment, you need to study the customs clearance rules for its import into the country you are traveling to. For example, the value of goods moved across the Russian border should not exceed 65 thousand rubles, and you will also have to prove that you purchased it not for commercial purposes. Items whose value exceeds this amount are subject to customs duty of 30% of their value.

Importing a computer into many countries, such as Uzbekistan, Egypt, Turkey, the Czech Republic, etc., requires mandatory written declaration.
