The independent committee of migration advisors presented to the ministry a list of jobs that may be filled by foreigners. In October this year, the Home Office is to publish the final list of professions for admitting labor migrants from outside the European Union and issuing them corresponding permits.
According to RIA Novosti, the total number of jobs open to foreign workers is being reduced from approximately 1 million to 700,000. The list includes, among others, school teachers of mathematics and natural sciences, a number of engineering specialties, qualified nurses and specialist doctors, speech therapists, veterinary surgeons, head chefs, ballet dancers, frozen fish filleters (for Scotland), and other specialties.
"The list of specialties with a shortage of people recommended to us will allow the development of a more flexible and broader system of labor categories, but will reduce the total number of individual positions open to migrants by 30%," according to the press release.
Previously, the British government only set an overall quota for admitting foreign labor to the UK labor market. Now, the next stage of a points-based system modeled on the Australian system for assessing each foreign candidate for work in the country is being introduced. "The points-based system means that migrants with the skills that Britain needs can come, but no more. Unlike artificially set quotas, this will allow the government to direct labor where it is needed," said UK Immigration Minister Liam Byrne.
