The results of the study were not unexpected, since English firmly dominates in all European countries as a second, almost 'mandatory' language, and the English, Scots, residents of Wales or Northern Ireland have virtually no need to learn other European languages.
As noted in the report of the Austrian Research Centre, Luxembourg ranks first in Europe in the number of citizens who speak foreign languages. In Austria, every second resident speaks English more or less fluently. In countries such as Romania, Italy or Portugal, as well as in most Central European countries or the Baltic states, more people speak German than English.
The Austrian Research Centre emphasizes that after the accession of ten new countries to the European Union, Russian has also become one of the most important languages of the EU.
