The price of air tickets from the UK to Europe often amounts to just a few pounds sterling, allowing young Britons to easily travel abroad to have fun. According to the document, various accidents and arrests often occur during pre-wedding bachelor and bachelorette parties, which Britons increasingly hold in Europe, primarily in the Czech Republic.
The report 'Behavior of Britons Abroad' provides statistics on incidents involving Britons. According to the document, the most popular country for pleasant leisure among Britons is Spain. Between March 2005 and April 2006, it was visited by 13.8 million people. At the same time, Spain leads in terms of deaths of Britons, their arrests, lost passports, and the number of cases requiring intervention by the British consulate.
In Greece, over the same period, the largest number of Britons – 48 people – were victims of rape. Additionally, in Greece, Britons most often end up in hospitals. The British Foreign Office attributes the high number of hospitalizations in Greece to overly lenient alcohol rules in the areas most popular with British subjects.
Noting that the main task of the Foreign Ministry is undoubtedly to help British subjects in trouble abroad, the Foreign Office, however, emphasizes that many problems could easily be avoided. 'Simple precautions – such as studying your travel itinerary, purchasing comprehensive insurance, knowing medical prescriptions, and carrying copies of important documents – would help avoid common injuries, risks, and dangers that travelers face,' the report states.
The behavior of Britons abroad has already begun to create problems for the tourism industry, American Mike Johnson, head of a travel agency in Riga, told the BBC. 'Latvia is a very calm, modest country; people here are very quiet. They, for example, teach their children not to talk on the tram while riding. And then a group of loud guys appears, drinking, tearing off their T-shirts, running around the streets, shouting, and urinating on our monuments. All this is not taken very well,' Johnson shared.
