Representatives of Car System, a company manufacturing anti-theft systems, support the authorities' initiative and state that all cars should be sold with a pre-installed tracking system. In their opinion, one of the best options is a system that allows remote engine and electronic system lockout.
In the event of theft, the owner need only call the police, provide a special code word and distinctive features of the car. The engine will then be remotely shut off, and the car's location determined via a GPS transmitter built into the alarm. If the car is in a "high-risk" area, a special team of off-duty police officers will accompany the police to retrieve the vehicle and deliver it to the owner.
How much installing a car alarm and similar anti-theft systems will reduce the number of stolen cars – time will tell. Currently, Brazil ranks among the world leaders in this regard: in Rio de Janeiro, a car is stolen every 12 minutes, and in São Paulo, every three minutes.
