Basel is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year
Basel is the warmest city in Switzerland, due to its location in a basin between three chains of low mountains: the French Vosges, the German Black Forest, and the Swiss Jura. The Rhine River divides the city into two parts: Greater Basel on the left bank and Lesser Basel on the right bank. These parts are connected by 6 bridges, as well as a unique ferry boat.
Greater Basel is the historical center of the city. The history of this amazing area begins in 347 AD: the first mention of the fortress Basilia, built by the Romans in the Rhine valley, dates from this year. Greater Basel is a pedestrian zone, abundant with cathedrals and old houses, among which the Cathedral stands out regally – a grand brick-red structure combining elements of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
In Lesser Basel, the building of the town hall invariably attracts tourists' attention. In 1460, the second university in Europe was opened here. Since then, Basel has had a reputation as a bohemian city. There are more than 30 museums here, displaying rich collections of artworks, as well as collections of minerals, archaeological finds, tapestries, clocks, ancient weapons, porcelain, etc.
This Swiss corner is also famous for its cultural traditions. This city is the carnival capital of Switzerland, and perhaps of all Europe: the famous Basel Carnival lasts three days before the start of Lent. But to participate in this unusual colorful procession, for which the locals prepare all year, tourists flock from all over the world. Basel also hosts the prestigious art exhibition Art Basel annually.
In 1471, Emperor Frederick III of the Holy Roman Empire allowed fairs to be held here. The jewelry and watch fair still takes place every year at the beginning of April and attracts not only ordinary tourists but also many celebrities and stars.
