Australia will tighten rules for issuing work visas to foreigners
As the BBC notes, the restrictions will affect the rules for issuing work visa number 457. It was typically used to hire workers in the restaurant business, medical and computer companies. Most visa holders entering Australia were citizens of India, China and Britain.
According to some experts, this visa, issued to foreign specialists, was a reason for denying jobs to Australian citizens. The government plans to replace this visa with two new categories of visas with stricter selection criteria and a smaller list of permitted occupations.
"The new visa system is designed solely to protect national interests," Turnbull said. He stressed that current holders of this visa will not be affected by the changes.
Work visa number 457 is issued by Australian authorities for a period of four years. It allows the worker to bring their family as well.
Of the nearly 96,000 people living in Australia last year on this visa, 24.6% were citizens of India, 19.5% were British subjects, and 5.8% were citizens of China.
