As stated by Australia's Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock, currently in the Woomera camp in the south of the country, where several hunger strikes and riots have occurred in recent years, only 77 people remain. He also stated that since December 2001, when the conservative government of John Howard tightened the country's immigration policy, not a single ship with illegal immigrants has arrived at its shores. Currently, in six camps throughout Australia, designed for 2,900 people, there are 1,100 seekers of a better life.
