European countries host the best Christmas markets
Berlin, Germany
In the German capital, about 60 Christmas markets opened this year, and each offers something special. Start with Winter World at Potsdamer Platz; authentic mulled wine and bratwurst are available at the market near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.
Paris, France
In Paris, Christmas tree ornaments, souvenirs, and mulled wine are sold on every corner in the run-up to Christmas, but several markets are worth noting. The one at the Esplanade de La Défense metro is the largest (about 10,000 square meters), while the one on the Champs-Élysées is considered the most touristy, but it's the place to go for an ice rink or children's rides. Also, check out the New Year markets at Montparnasse, Place des Abbesses, Place Saint-Sulpice, and the Santa Claus Village (village du Père Noël).
Tallinn, Estonia
The main market of the Estonian capital is at Town Hall Square, which has hardly changed over the past few centuries. It is always crowded. Tourists either stroll around, looking at the simple handicrafts of the vendors, or warm up in one of the many cafes. By the way, don't try to order mulled wine – locals are more accustomed to the phrase "hot wine."
Munich, Germany
The market in Munich, along with those in Berlin and Cologne, is considered one of the most interesting in Germany. Tourists come here, of course, not only for wooden angels for the tree but also for seasonal beer brewed by the world-famous local breweries.
Vienna, Austria
The largest Viennese market is located in front of the City Hall. As everywhere in the city, tourists queue for the famous Mozart chocolates. Locals prefer handmade toys. You can also participate in one of the workshops – for example, learn to bake Christmas gingerbread or strudel.
Verona, Italy
The Christmas market period in Verona lasts from mid-November to January. The city is lit up with festive illuminations, and streets are decorated with hundreds of handmade nativity scenes.
London, United Kingdom
In December, central London is transformed. Everywhere there are decorations, luminescent building lighting, and Christmas trees. At the city's main market, Winter Wonderland, you can ride one of the many attractions and buy delicious sweets. However, exercise restraint in shopping – prices are steep.
Madrid, Spain
Festive Madrid is very different from other European capitals. Spanish flavor is everywhere – for example, Santa treats guests not to Christmas pudding and mulled wine, but to paella and Spanish beer.
Stockholm, Sweden
The city of Karlsson and the irrepressible Pippi Longstocking seems made for various markets, festive processions, and other entertainment events. In the run-up to the New Year, the entire old city center – Gamla Stan – turns into one big market, where items in the famous Scandinavian style coexist with Swedish meatballs and warming pear cider.
