The international status of the English language makes it necessary for every person concerned about their career. English abroad, and also in our country, has long become a recognized means of international communication. There are significant reasons for this: English is spoken by the population of several large developed countries, including residents of the United States; it is easier to learn than most other European and world languages; it is logical and concise.
Gone are the days when the vague phrase "I read and translate with a dictionary" indicated sufficient language skills. In any moderately prestigious position, a completely different level is now required – the ability to use the language fluently, an extensive active vocabulary. That is, ideally, a person should use a foreign language with the same ease as their native one.
Such requirements are by no means excessive. Our era demands the ability to quickly manipulate information, and the interaction of cultures and businesses across different countries is becoming ever deeper. However, this is where a major contradiction lies between the demands of the time and the education we all receive in secondary school.
The fact is that the school curriculum for teaching English is quite outdated. Developing proper speaking skills in large classes is practically impossible; the main focus is on text exercises, rote memorization of a certain lexical minimum, and acting out memorized "situations." All of this does little to help achieve competent language mastery.
Of course, every person who wants to succeed in business life must find a way out of this unfortunate situation. The simplest and quite effective way is to enroll in courses. It is convenient: you can always find courses near home or work, studying does not take much time, and among the many schools and courses that exist today in any moderately large city, anyone can find something that perfectly matches all their desires, whims, and needs.
However, there are also some drawbacks to this type of learning – it is almost impossible to achieve truly harmonious command of the language through courses alone, because the student is still not fully immersed in the language environment.
So, if a person has set the goal of learning the language as a "second native language," the most reasonable way for them is to study English abroad. In this case, the language will be acquired not only in class but also "on its own," in everyday situations – on the bus, in the store, on the street, on the phone – the learner will be forced to speak English. As a result, their active vocabulary will rapidly increase, and it will be precisely the words that anyone might need at any moment, not just those memorized by teacher's assignment. Pronunciation will also tend toward the natural, toward what the learner constantly hears around them. In addition, studying English abroad allows for a better understanding of the culture and traditions of English-speaking countries, which can be useful when communicating with foreigners in the future.
As for choosing a country, a modern person has a vast field of opportunities. If you want to achieve perfect pronunciation of a true Englishman, it is of course better to go to Britain. However, if that is not so important, there can be many options – from the already familiar trips to the USA to studying in New Zealand. It all depends on your personal preferences.
