On average, each French person goes on dates 14 times a year
According to the survey data, the average French person goes on dates up to 14 times a year. This is a record compared to other European countries and the USA, where OnePoll conducted its research. Moreover, only first romantic dates are counted; all others can safely be called "long-term relationships." However, out of these 14 dates, at least two become a "complete fiasco," respondents admit.
Therefore, 44% of French people openly say they regret the costs – both financial and time – incurred for a first date. True, 80% of them are embarrassed to suggest splitting the bill.
On each first date, a French person spends more than the average European. Thus, the average cost of a date in France, according to the survey, is 63.90 euros, while in Great Britain the figure is 37.30 euros. Even more, a French man or woman is willing to spend on preparation for a date – up to 177 euros. In preparation for a date, the French include costs for transportation (14 euros), clothing (49 euros), hairdresser and cosmetics (76 euros), and purchase of contraceptives (14 euros).
50% of French men and 39% of French women believe that dinner or an invitation to the cinema and theater on a first date should be paid for by the man. This also portrays the French in a positive light compared to other Europeans and Americans, the survey authors claim.
If a romantic, but not first, date is scheduled for February 14, then each French person is willing to spend about 100 euros (to be precise, 94.16) on a gift. And here the French break records for generosity: the average Briton spends three times less on a gift.
