Universities were assessed by indicators of research work, including the number of Nobel Prize laureates and world-renowned scientists, academic achievements, and the number of articles on natural sciences and humanities published in leading scientific journals.
The top ten best universities in the world were led by American universities Harvard (Harvard University), Stanford (Stanford), Caltech (Caltech), the University of California – Berkeley (University of California – Berkeley), and British Cambridge (University of Cambridge).
Also included in the top ten were the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton (Prinston), Yale (Yale), and British Oxford (Oxford). The list of ten is closed by American Columbia University (Columbia University).
Tokyo University (Tokyo University) breaks the list of American and British universities at the 19th position. The first among Canadian universities is the University of Toronto (University of Toronto) in 23rd place. Among European universities, the 25th spot was taken by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – Zurich), and the Swedish Royal Institute of Stockholm (Karolinska Inst Stockholm) – 39th.
The fortieth was the Dutch University of Utrecht (University of Utrecht), the German University of Munich (University of Munich) – 48th. And among universities in the Asia-Pacific region, the Australian National University (Australian National University) became the last in the list of the first 50 universities.
As for Israeli universities, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem ranked 94th in this list, Tel Aviv University – 119th, and the Weizmann Institute – 151st.
