As Reuters reports, Viviane Reding called the introduction of the single number "a good gift for all Europeans, which was made just in time, as many of them spend New Year and Christmas holidays in neighboring EU countries."
Since 1998, 112 has been the single emergency number for all mobile operators in the EU. Alongside it, each country had separate numbers for calling the police, fire brigade, and medical services.
